Power Boat Overview

Power Boats are operated by a motorized engine. Typical engine types found on a power boat include an Inboard/Outboard, Inboard, Outboard, or Surface Drive engine and the engines are powered by either gasoline or diesel fuel. There are many styles of Power Boats that can be used in either freshwater or saltwater with some of the most common types including center consoles, pontoon boats, dual-consoles, deck boats, skiffs,¬†express cruisers, bowriders, fishing boats, and ski/wakeboard boats.

Sail Boats are powered by wind through one ore more sails. Many sail boats also have an engine, though the engine is not the main source of power while underway. There are many types of sails with the most common being the mainsail and headsail (also referred to as a jib sail).¬† There are a number of other sails including genoa, spinnaker, and gennaker sails that are found on sailboats. Personal Watercrafts (PWCs) are powered by an inboard engine that drives a pump jet and impeller to create thrust and propel and steer the PWC. There are a two main styles of PWC; a sit down style PWC where as the name implies, you sit on a seat, and a stand-up PWC where you can either stand or kneel. Stand-up style PWCs are more typically used for racing and tricks and typically accomodate 1 rider. Sit down style PWCs can come in a variety of setups and are often found in either one-seater, two-seater, three-seater and four-seater versions. Many people recognize PWCs using their trademarked name Jet-Ski, which is actually the brand name of a particular type of PWC manufactured by Kawasaki. Other common brand names of PWCs include Yamaha Waverunners and Sea-Doo (Bombardier) and Honda Aquatrax.

Small Boats are can either be powered by a motorized engine or propelled by wind or paddles. There are many styles of Small Boats that can be used in either freshwater or saltwater with some of the most common types including inflatable rafts, jon boats, dinghys, kayaks and canoes.

Pontoon Boats are becoming increasingly popular and are a great way to enjoy time on the water with family and friends. Rather than a traditional hull, pontoon boats that have two or more structures called pontoons that they float on.
